Curious about the difference between Smart and Promethean interactive screens? You’re not the only one – this is one of the most common questions we get.
The reality is that today, the boards from both companies are so similar that it’s tough to pick a clear winner based on specifications alone. Both Smart and Promethean offer interactive screens in the same sizes with the same HD resolution, multiple simultaneous touch points, built-in Android, WiFi connectivity, integrated speakers – and the list just goes on.
The real comparison is the software. That’s really what sets these two companies apart. For the purposes of this comparison, we’re only going to focus on the educational software available from each company.
Smart offers its basic Smart Notebook software for free, and it’s included with every Smart board. This is your basic whiteboarding software, similar to what you’ll find on pretty much every interactive screen. The basic free version of Smart Notebook lets you write and draw on a blank digital canvas using a wide range of pen tools. You can add shapes, text, tables, lines and images. You can even import Powerpoint and PDF files right into the software and use them in your lessons.
You can also insert images and widgets like timers from the Smart library. However, these features are pretty limited in the free version of Notebook. There’s a long list of locked features in the free version of Smart Notebook which you can unlock by purchasing the full Smart Learning Suite. This requires an annual paid subscription.
In the full version of Smart Notebook, you’ll get access to all the software features. You’ll also get access to another program called Lumio. Lumio also offers flexibility for learning in any environment, whether remote or hybrid. Features of Lumio include live polls, formative assessments, and game-based quizzes. You can even create a collaborative canvas that students can access on their own devices. The entire class can contribute together in real time from school or home, or a combination of both.
Now on to Promethean. Promethean’s lesson creation and whiteboarding software is called ActivInspire. Overall, the basic whiteboarding and lesson creation capabilities of ActivInspire are very similar to Smart Notebook. You have a toolbar with all your main functions like lines, text, shapes, colors, and pen types. You can import existing assets including PDF files, PowerPoints, and even Smart Notebook files. You can embed links and even external files like Word documents.
You can download ActivInspire for free, but you will only be able to access the personal version. Just like with Smart Notebook, there’s a long list of disabled features in the free personal edition of ActivInspire. In order to upgrade to the professional version, there is a one-time fee but no recurring subscription. A free upgrade to ActivInspire professional is included with select Promethean interactive displays.
Promethean ClassFlow is the company’s cloud-based lesson delivery software. Similar to Smart Lumio, ClassFlow makes it easy to connect with your class in any remote or hybrid environment. The main difference is that ClassFlow is completely free.
Students can join your ClassFlow lesson via a unique link from any device including laptops, Chromebooks, and tablets. ClassFlow is also totally browser-based so there’s nothing extra your students need to download.
ClassFlow also offers a few extra features. You can create polls or quizzes and send them to the entire class instantly. You can add multiple question types and have your class answer in real time to make sure everyone understands the lesson. You can even respond to students individually to assist those who are struggling.
You can also quickly create interactive activities to get your students engaged with your lesson. ClassFlow offers 10 activity types including crosswords, word searches, memory games, matching, flash cards, and labeling.
